A concerned punters club have been forced to stage an intervention after one of their members expressed a desire to ‘reunite’ with the Chris Waller-trained Angel Capital in Saturday’s G1 Rupert Clarke Stakes.

Local punter Christopher Flannery, 33, has religiously backed Angel Capital in all eight starts since an unlucky fourth in last year’s edition of the race, and despite promising those closest to him that it was “over” following a sub-par showing in the G1 Memsie Stakes, appears to be on the verge of taking the son of Harry Angel back. 

“I caught up with him on Sunday night and he was saying some pretty alarming stuff,” one friend told The Pakistan Star on the condition of anonymity.

“We decided it was time to confront him about it, but it was really hard to get through to him.

“He just kept arguing that things would be different this time, that he thinks the tempo and ‘race shape’ will suit, that the gap will come…” they said.

While the group did manage to stop the punter from backing Angel Capital in the all-in market — reportedly distracting him with YouTube replays of superstar greyhound closer Swift Fantasy — they hold grave fears that he will ‘launch’ as soon as final fields are published.

“He once climbed out of the bathroom window to back Sooboog, unfortunately I think there’s a bit of a pattern developing here.”
